Montpellier

The capital of Languedoc Roussillon, Montpellier is a one-thousand-year-old city teeming with life.  Despite its relatively modest size, it has transformed itself in recent years into one of France's foremost centers of research, medicine, and technology.  It has also gained a reputation for its lively cultural scene, which includes top-notch theater, music, and dance performances.  It is a cosmopolitan city that has managed to retain a certain small-town charm, much like Louisville.  One of the greatest pleasures awaiting you in Montpellier is the joy of wandering through the narrow, winding streets of centre-ville filled with cafés and restaurants.

Out of 280,000 inhabitants, more than one-third are students.  Although much of the student population leaves during the summer months, Montpellier is an undeniably youthful city.  Its newer buildings (like the Antigone complex) revel a bold, daring architectural style unique to this city.  In June, the city puts on an impressive dance festival, and in July it plays host to a music festival that attracts some of the country's top talents.
